Public profile

The Resonants perform regularly in Canberra and the surrounding region and have an excellent reputation for polished & professional performances. Our concerts have been recorded and played on ABC Classic FM and ArtSound FM radio stations along with tracks from our three CDs. Reviews have been written about us in The Canberra Times and we have appeared on Win TV and ABC TV's Stateline.

The group is often invited to sing as special guests at embassy receptions, exhibition openings and cultural festivals. And we have competed successfully in numerous eisteddfods in Canberra and the region. The Idea of North recently invited us to support them on their Gospel Project tour concert in Canberra - what a blast!

Click to see full detail on ABC Classic FM website The Resonants was one of only four adult choirs selected from a field of over 20 choirs from the ACT and regional NSW to qualify for the ACT state final of ABC Classic FM's inaugural national Choir of the Year competition.

At a live broadcast from Llewellyn Hall, presented by Damien Beaumont on Saturday 5 August 2006, The Resonants performed a varied repertoire of seven pieces to the very best of our ability, for which the judges pronounced us winner of the state final and a handsome trophy!

(The Resonants start at about 1hr 18mins)

We thank ABC Classic FM for running this competition. It was a challenging and rewarding experience and a great pleasure to hear so much fantastic choral music sung by so many wonderful choirs across the country. For full details of the competition, visit the ABC Classic FM website.

Charity performances

The Resonants aim to perform at least one event each year where the proceeds are donated to a local or national charity of the group's choice, or we are invited by charitable organisations to participate in their program.

In April 2007 we travelled to Tumut to perform with students from the three primary schools plus the Tumut District Combined Choir in a concert dedicated to the memory of Louise Rowen, a much loved and respected local school teacher. The singers of Tumut were thrilled to be able to stage a full concert with a "professional" choir. The town is still raving about it!

We donated the proceeds of our 2006 Christmas concert to Lifeline ACT, the local branch of a fantastic telephone counselling service.

We started 2005 by organising the Canberra Musicians' Tsunami Concert on Saturday 26 February. Together with the Canberra Girls' Grammar School, well-known Canberra musicians such as soprano Louise Page, pianist Robert Schmidli and the Oriana Chorale, and the support of the local community, we raised over $7000, all of which we donated to the Australian Red Cross Asian Quake and Tsunami Appeal. Thank you, Canberra!

The Resonants in concert for the Asain Tsunami Appeal

Our 2004 Christmas Concert in association with Canberra Rotary International clubs raised funds which we donated to Galilee Inc, a non-profit organisation providing services to disadvantaged Canberran children, to help rebuild their facilities burnt down in the January 2003 bushfires.

In 2003, the Resonants performed with outstanding Australian cellist David Pereira, pioneering guitar quartet Guitar Trek and several local artists for a Bushfire Appeal Concert in the wake of the fires which devastated Canberra on 18 January 2003. Everyone in Canberra knew someone who was affected by the fires and our choir was no exception, so it was very satisfying to contribute to the recovery efforts in this way.

The Resonants performed a short program of carols at Calvary Hospital which was video-taped and broadcast internally for patients and staff who were unable to get home to their families over Christmas 2003. It was a real delight to know that our music brought the Christmas spirit to these people! Additionally, the proceeds from our family Christmas concert at Radford Chapel on Sunday 14 December were donated to The Smith Family and St Vincent De Paul Christmas Appeals.

At the end of 2003, we chose to donate our profits from the year's activities to Cyclops, a local charity supporting children who are carers.
